Why it exists

The problem it solves

Most new Umbraco projects start with the same groundwork: document types, templates, navigation, SEO fields, email settings and error pages. Doing this by hand for every small site costs days before any real content goes in. OskiStarterKit packs that groundwork into one NuGet install, so a team can start from a working site instead of an empty backoffice.

Typical uses

  • Launching a small business website on Umbraco in days instead of weeks
  • Starting a personal or portfolio site with a blog
  • Giving a new Umbraco developer a working reference project
  • Setting up a company site with careers and vacancy pages

Features

What OskiStarterKit does

Ships with: Oski.Core: shared library installed with the starter kit. It carries the kit's core logic and pulls in SeoToolkit, Limbo tables and Google auth packages. Latest 1.0.5.1 targets Umbraco 13 and .NET 8.

Prebuilt page types

Ships Razor views for a home page, blog and blog posts, careers and vacancies, pricing plans, about us, information pages, a sitemap page, a locked page and a 404 page.

Block Grid layouts

Pages are assembled from reusable Block Grid blocks, and editors see a live preview of the layout while they edit.

Multi-level navigation

Header menu items, child items and social links are managed as content in the backoffice, with no hard-coded menus.

SEO fields on every page

SeoToolkit is included, so each page has fields for meta title, meta description, canonical URL and related search settings.

SMTP settings in the backoffice

An SMTP Configuration tab in the Settings section stores mail server values and lets you test sending.

Custom error pages

A 404 page is part of the content tree, and a middleware call (app.UseCustomErrorPage) routes errors to it, with per-culture pages set in appsettings.json.

Free and open license

Published under the MIT license on NuGet and listed on the Umbraco Marketplace.

How it works

From install to first use

dotnet add package OskiStarterKit
  1. Create an Umbraco project

Install the Umbraco templates and create a new project with your admin user and database connection string.

  2. Add the package

Run dotnet add package OskiStarterKit, then build and run. The kit adds its document types, templates and sample content.

  3. Set up email and errors

Fill in the SMTP Configuration tab under Settings, point Error404Collection in appsettings.json to your 404 page, and register app.UseCustomErrorPage() at startup.

  4. Edit and publish

Replace the sample content, adjust menus and SEO fields, and build new pages from Block Grid blocks.

FAQ

OskiStarterKit questions

Need a custom feature or help installing? OSKI built this package and can help.

Contact us
Is OskiStarterKit free?+

Yes. It is free to download from NuGet and is published under the MIT license.

Which Umbraco version do I need?+

The current 4.x release targets Umbraco 13 and .NET 8. Older releases exist for Umbraco 9 and 10 (1.x), 11 (2.x) and 12 (3.x).

Can I add it to an existing site?+

It is built as a starting point for a new project. It adds its own document types, templates and content, so a fresh Umbraco install is the safest target.

What is Oski.Core?+

A companion library that the starter kit installs automatically. It holds the shared code the kit relies on, so you do not need to add it yourself.

How do I set up email?+

Open the Settings section, go to the SMTP Configuration tab, enter your mail server details and submit.

Where can I get help?+

OSKI Solutions built the kit and offers Umbraco development and consulting. Get in touch if you need help adapting it.
