The client

About the client

An online platform that helps primary and secondary schools teach neighboring Nordic languages and connect classes across the Nordic countries.

The platform supports teaching of the neighboring Nordic languages in primary and secondary schools and encourages cultural exchange between pupils. Its media library holds Nordic films, series and documentaries, each paired with teaching material.

A Friend Class feature helps schools find partner classes in another Nordic country for joint projects. OSKI worked on the Umbraco back-office that the platform's editors and admins rely on.

The challenge

What had to be solved

A content-heavy, multilingual platform for schools needs more from its back-office than standard Umbraco offers.

  • Admins needed reports on platform activity they could export and work with.
  • Editors had to mark words in a text and attach their meanings and translations in other Nordic languages.
  • Users needed a way to discuss materials in the portal, and admins needed a way to moderate it.
The approach

How the team built it

Reports inside Umbraco

The team built reporting features and custom plugins for back-office admins, with Excel export. Admins can, for example, filter Friend Class contacts by date and by origin and destination country.

An editor that knows translations

A multi-language rich text editor in the back-office lets editors select a word, define its meaning and add translations. Learners then see the support right in the text.

Comments with a moderator view

A comments plugin lets users talk to each other on any material. A dashboard gives admins statistics, filters and actions for managing comments and replies.

The outcome

What changed

Editors and admins now handle reporting, translations and community moderation in one place, inside Umbraco.

  • Activity reports export to Excel straight from the back-office.
  • Texts carry word meanings and translations added by editors.
  • Pupils and teachers can comment on materials, under admin moderation.
